1. deny / refuse

The teenager denied stealing the DVDs from the store.
She denied that her kids had broken the window.

The employee was fired after he refused to do what the manager asked.
The people having the party are refusing to turn down the volume of the music.

2. afraid / scared / frightened

但在這種結構中,我們可能會比較常看到“be afraid of”和“be scared of ”。
She’s afraid / scared / frightened of spiders.
I’m not afraid / scared of heights.

例如,“The loud noise scared / frightened me.” 千萬不要說“The loud noise afraid me.”,這是錯誤的用法。

例如,“It was a scary / frightening experience.” 再次強調,不要說“It was a afraid experience.”,因為那是不正確的。

3. staff / employees

The company’s staff was happy about the extra day off.
The company’s employees were happy about the extra day off.

使用“staff”這字時,我們可以使用“the whole staff” 或“the entire staff”。 例如,您可以說“He sent the email to the whole staff / the entire staff.”或者“He sent the email to all the employees.”。

4. interfere / intervene

I wish my mother would stop interfering in my life!

Bob and Joe were about to start fighting, but Pam intervened and calmed them down.

5. problem / trouble

I’m having a problem with the computer.
I’m having trouble with the computer.

The bad internet connection caused problems / trouble for the students.
We have two major problems.
但是不要說“We have two major troubles.”,那是不對的。

例如,“These test results are troubling me.

6. relation / relationship

I’ve been dating my boyfriend for three years. We have a great relationship.
He has a terrible relationship with his father.

I’m studying the relationship / relation between education levels and poverty.
There’s a close relation / relationship between smoking and lung disease.

7. suppose / supposed to

He’s not answering his cell phone. I suppose he’s already gone to bed; after all, it’s midnight.

I was supposed to go to work today, but I’m sick so I stayed home.

8. switch / change

I’m going to change a few things in my life this year.

Could you switch seats with me, so that I can sit next to my husband?

Her personality has changed a lot recently.

I wasn’t happy with my Nokia cell phone, so I switched to a Samsung.
(I stopped using the Nokia and started using the Samsung)
